Hyaluronic Acid for Dry Skin: How to Use It Correctly

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and holds water, helping the skin’s surface feel more hydrated and look temporarily plumper. For dry skin, it works best when applied to slightly damp skin and followed with a moisturizer that adds emollients and helps slow water loss. Hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid and does not permanently fill wrinkles.

What hyaluronic acid does

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and is used in topical skincare in different molecular sizes and forms. A recent scientific review describes its cosmetic roles in hydration and skin feel while noting that performance depends on molecular weight and formulation. Review the PubMed overview of topical hyaluronic acid.

How to apply it

  1. Cleanse gently and leave skin slightly damp.
  2. Apply a small, even layer of hyaluronic acid serum.
  3. Follow with moisturizer before the serum fully dries.
  4. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen.

The current Organic Hyaluronic Acid Serum – Plumping Hydration 1 oz. is a Glimmer Goddess option for the serum step. Use the amount directed on the label; more product does not automatically create more hydration.

What to combine with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid layers easily with many routines because it focuses on hydration rather than exfoliation. Follow it with a moisturizer chosen for your skin type. Dry skin may prefer a cream; oily or combination skin may prefer a lighter lotion or gel-cream. See our guide to layering skincare in the correct order.

Can hyaluronic acid feel drying?

Some people notice tightness when a humectant serum is used alone, applied to very dry skin, or not followed with a moisturizer. The solution is usually to use less, apply to slightly damp skin, and seal with an appropriate cream or lotion. If burning, rash, or persistent irritation occurs, stop using the product.

Is it only for dry skin?

No. Dehydration can occur in oily, combination, and sensitive skin too. The supporting moisturizer should be adjusted to the skin type. Hyaluronic acid itself does not treat acne, eczema, rosacea, or another skin disease.

Dry-skin guidance

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends short warm showers, gentle cleansing, and applying moisturizer while skin is still damp. Read the AAD recommendations for dry skin.

FAQ

Should hyaluronic acid go on wet or dry skin?

Slightly damp skin is a practical choice. Follow promptly with moisturizer.

Can I use it every day?

Many people can, but follow the product directions and reduce use if irritation occurs.

Does hyaluronic acid exfoliate?

No. Despite its name, it is a hydrating humectant rather than an exfoliating acid.
