How to Layer Skincare Products: The Right Order for AM & PM

Skincare layering does not need to feel like chemistry class. The most useful rule is simple: start with clean skin, apply targeted leave-on products, moisturize, and finish your morning routine with sunscreen.

The exact number of steps is optional. A routine that is comfortable and consistent is usually more useful than a complicated lineup that irritates your skin.

The Basic Morning Skincare Order

  1. Cleanser
  2. Treatment or serum
  3. Moisturizer
  4. Sunscreen
  5. Makeup, if desired

This follows the same general sequence recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology: cleanse first, apply treatment products, then moisturizer and/or sunscreen. See the AAD skincare-order guidance.

Step 1: Cleanse Gently

Use a cleanser that removes makeup, sunscreen, excess oil and daily buildup without leaving your skin feeling tight or stripped. Very hot water and aggressive scrubbing can increase dryness and irritation, so lukewarm water and a gentle touch are better choices.

Step 2: Toner Is Optional

You do not need toner for a routine to work. Modern toners can add hydration or deliver specific cosmetic ingredients, but they do not literally “close” pores. If you enjoy a toner and your skin tolerates it, use it after cleansing and before serums.

Step 3: Apply Targeted Serums or Treatments

Apply leave-on products according to their directions and your main skin concerns. A practical approach is to use lighter, water-based serums before richer creams simply because they spread more easily that way—not because thin products are guaranteed to “penetrate deeper.”

For dehydration, Glimmer Goddess® Organic Hyaluronic Acid Serum – Plumping Hydration 1 oz. can be layered before moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, helping the skin hold water and look temporarily smoother and more hydrated.

Do You Need Several Serums at Once?

No. Using multiple active products at the same time can increase the chance of irritation, especially if you are combining exfoliating or otherwise intensive formulas. Start with the concern that matters most to you and add products gradually.

You also do not need to wait one or two full minutes between every layer unless a product’s directions specifically tell you to. In most routines, allowing one layer to settle enough that the next applies comfortably is sufficient.

Step 4: Moisturize

Moisturizer helps reduce water loss and supports a comfortable skin barrier. Choose texture based on your skin type and climate: lighter lotions may feel better on oilier or combination skin, while richer creams can be more comfortable for dry skin.

Step 5: Sunscreen Comes Last in the Morning

Broad-spectrum sunscreen is the final skincare step before makeup. It should not be diluted by mixing it into a serum or moisturizer unless the finished product itself is formulated and labeled with SPF.

For an all-in-one daytime moisturizer with labeled SPF, Glimmer Goddess® Triple Action Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 is a current option. Apply sunscreen as directed on the label and reapply when needed based on exposure and product directions.

A Simple Evening Skincare Order

  1. Cleanser
  2. Treatment or serum
  3. Moisturizer or night cream

At night, sunscreen is removed from the routine. If you prefer a richer final step, Glimmer Goddess® Organic Skin Renewal Night Cream 2 oz. is designed as an overnight moisturizer.

Where Do Masks and Exfoliants Fit?

Rinse-off masks and exfoliants generally belong after cleansing and before leave-on serums and moisturizer. They do not need to be used every day. Follow the individual product directions, and avoid stacking several exfoliating products in the same routine if your skin becomes sensitive.

What About Eye Products?

Eye serums and creams can be applied before or after your face serum depending on their texture. The most important points are to use a small amount, avoid getting product into the eye, and follow the formula’s directions.

Three Layering Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overcomplicating the routine: more products do not automatically mean better results.
  • Ignoring irritation: burning, persistent stinging or worsening redness are signs to simplify your routine.
  • Treating sunscreen as optional: daytime sun protection deserves its own intentional step.

The Bottom Line

The best skincare order is the one that keeps each product’s job clear: cleanse, apply targeted leave-on care, moisturize and protect with sunscreen during the day. Toner is optional, long waiting periods are usually unnecessary, and a simple routine used consistently can be more practical than a ten-step regimen.
