Sunless Tanning: How to Get a Natural-Looking Glow Safely

Sunless tanner creates a tanned appearance without requiring ultraviolet exposure. That makes it a safer cosmetic alternative to sunbathing or indoor tanning—but it does not protect against sunburn. Unless a product carries an SPF Drug Facts label, apply a separate broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day.

How sunless tanners create color

DHA is a color additive that reacts with amino acids in the outermost skin layer. DHA-free formulas may use another cosmetic tanning ingredient, such as erythrulose, to develop color more gradually. A bronzer or shimmer creates temporary surface color that washes away, while a developing tanner fades as surface cells naturally shed.

The FDA explains that DHA is permitted for external application but not for the eye area, lips, mucous membranes, inhalation, or ingestion. Follow the label and wash hands after applying.

How to get a more even result

  1. Exfoliate gently in advance. Spend a little extra time on elbows, knees, and ankles without scrubbing skin raw.
  2. Apply to dry skin. Water droplets can create uneven areas.
  3. Work in sections. Use circular motions on arms, legs, and torso.
  4. Use less on joints. Knees, elbows, ankles, and knuckles tend to look darker.
  5. Blend edges. Lightly feather wrists, ankles, hands, and feet.
  6. Let skin dry. Wear loose clothing and avoid sweating for the time stated on the label.

DHA-free versus faster-developing options

The DHA-Free Self Tanner for Sensitive Skin is a verified active formula that builds over 3–5 days and comes in Regular and Dark glow levels, with lightly scented and unscented options. The Organic DHA-Free Tanning Drops are another active gradual option designed to mix with moisturizer.

For color that develops within hours, the active Organic Self Tanner—Fast Bronze Glow combines DHA and erythrulose. Choose based on development time, application style, and skin tolerance—not fear-based claims about “chemicals.”

What does not create a safe tan

No food, supplement, oil, or unprotected time in the sun produces a protective “base tan.” Diet supports general health but should not be marketed as a tanning method. Avoid tanning beds and deliberately exposing skin to UV radiation for color.

Keep the result looking even

Moisturize regularly, avoid aggressive exfoliation, and pat skin dry after bathing. Chlorine, frequent shaving, and strong exfoliants can make color fade faster. Read what DHA-free self tanner means, how gradual tanning lotion works, and sun-safe skincare tips.

Frequently asked questions

Does self-tanner provide SPF?

Not unless the product is specifically labeled with SPF and regulated as a sunscreen. Treat ordinary self-tanner as providing no UV protection.

Can I apply self-tanner around my eyes?

Follow the product label. DHA is not permitted for use in the eye area, so avoid eyelids and the defined surrounding eye area with DHA products.

Why are my knees and elbows darker?

Thicker, drier areas absorb more color. Use less product there and blend with a small amount of plain moisturizer.
