How to Apply Self-Tanner for an Even, Natural-Looking Glow

For even-looking self-tanner, prepare dry areas, apply a thin layer in sections, blend carefully at joints, and give the formula time to dry and develop. Application technique matters more than using a heavy amount.

The day before

  • Exfoliate gently, especially at knees, elbows, ankles, and heels.
  • Shave or wax early enough for skin to feel calm before tanning.
  • Avoid aggressive scrubs that leave redness or stinging.

Immediately before application

Start with clean, fully dry skin. Apply a small amount of moisturizer to very dry areas so they do not grab excess color. Keep the rest of the skin free of heavy oils unless your product directions say otherwise.

Apply in sections

  1. Begin with the legs and work upward.
  2. Use circular motions and a thin, even layer.
  3. Blend sparingly over knees, elbows, ankles, wrists, and hands.
  4. Use leftover product rather than a fresh pump on feet and hands.
  5. Wash palms and between fingers immediately after application.

Face application

Use only a product labeled for facial use. Blend into the hairline, jaw, and neck while avoiding eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Self-tanning drops should be mixed only as their directions specify.

Drying and development

Allow the product to dry before dressing. Choose loose, dark clothing and avoid water, sweating, and friction for the initial period stated on the label. Do not judge developing color too early.

Choose the right development speed

For faster results, the Organic Self Tanner – Fast Bronze Glow uses DHA plus erythrulose. For gradual development over roughly three to five days, use the DHA Free Self Tanner for Sensitive Skin – Glow.

Maintain the result

Moisturize, pat skin dry after bathing, and reapply conservatively when color fades. Avoid repeated harsh exfoliation.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my ankles darker?

Dry, thicker areas can absorb more product. Moisturize first and use only a small residual amount there.

Does self-tanner protect against sunburn?

No. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen separately and follow its directions.
