Is Seawater Good for Your Skin?
Seawater is not a substitute for hydrating skincare. An ocean swim may feel refreshing, but salt, wind, sand, sun, and repeated wet-to-dry cycles can leave skin tight, dry, or irritated. Your best post-swim plan is simple: rinse with fresh water, moisturize, and renew sun protection.
What seawater can—and cannot—do
Salt water changes the skin’s surface environment, but its effects depend on concentration, exposure time, water quality, and the condition of your skin. A scientific review of salt water and skin found that laboratory and therapeutic salt solutions cannot be treated as interchangeable with an ordinary beach swim. Ocean water should not be presented as a treatment for acne, eczema, or other skin conditions.
If your skin barrier is already dry, freshly shaved, sunburned, or scratched, seawater may sting. Sand and towels add friction, while wind speeds evaporation. People with sensitive skin may notice discomfort sooner than those with oilier, more resilient skin.
Your after-swim routine
- Rinse promptly. Use clean, fresh water to remove salt, sand, and residue.
- Cleanse only when needed. A gentle cleanser can remove sunscreen and debris; avoid scrubbing.
- Pat dry. Leave a little moisture on the skin instead of rubbing with a towel.
- Moisturize. Apply a comfortable lotion while skin is slightly damp. An option for body care is our Organic Coconut Milk Body Lotion.
- Reapply sunscreen. Use a labeled, broad-spectrum product such as Organic Reef-Safe Sunscreen SPF 40, following its directions and reapplication instructions.
Extra care for a full beach day
Seek shade, wear protective clothing and a hat, and avoid staying in wet, sandy clothing longer than necessary. Do not exfoliate sunburned or abraded skin. If you develop a spreading rash, swelling, severe pain, or signs of infection after swimming, contact a medical professional.

Bottom line
Enjoy the ocean for what it is: a swim, not a skincare treatment. Fresh-water rinsing, moisturizer, broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, and protective clothing do far more to keep beach-day skin comfortable.
