Fragrance-Free vs. Unscented Skincare: The Difference

Fragrance-free and unscented are not interchangeable skincare terms. Fragrance-free generally means no fragrance ingredients were added to create or mask scent. Unscented means the finished product is intended to have little noticeable odor, but masking ingredients or naturally aromatic materials may still be present.

Quick answer: Choose fragrance-free when you are trying to avoid added fragrance. Choose unscented only after reviewing the full ingredient list, because “no noticeable smell” does not always mean “no fragrance-related ingredients.” Neither label guarantees that every sensitive person will tolerate the formula.

What fragrance-free means

A fragrance-free product should not use fragrance or perfume to add or hide odor. However, the formula can still have a natural raw-material scent, and it may contain botanical ingredients with their own aroma if they are used for another function.

For Glimmer Goddess, the locked internal standard is stricter: a fragrance-free variant contains no added essential oils. Product selection must still be made at the variant level because a single listing may include both scented and fragrance-free choices.

What unscented means

Unscented describes how a product smells, not necessarily how that result was achieved. The AAD explains in its eczema-friendly product guidance that unscented products may use fragrance to mask odor, while fragrance-free products are free of fragrances.

This distinction matters for fragrance allergy or highly reactive skin. Someone who merely dislikes a noticeable scent may be comfortable with unscented; someone avoiding fragrance allergens should examine the label more carefully.

Marketing imagery and front-label color do not clarify this difference; the ingredient list and exact variant name do.

Where essential oils fit

Essential oils are aromatic botanical materials. “Natural” does not make them non-fragrant or allergy-proof. A product containing essential oils should not be treated as fragrance-free under the Glimmer Goddess standard, even when the scent is light.

The Organic Sensitive Skin Cleanser – Gentle AHA Face Wash contains lemon essential oil and is therefore not fragrance-free. Its sensitive-skin positioning does not override the ingredient list.

Verified Glimmer Goddess options

The active Organic Coconut Milk Body Lotion – Ultra-Hydrating offers distinct Fragrance-Free and Lavender Lemon variants. Choose Fragrance-Free specifically when avoiding added essential oils.

The active Organic Copper Peptide Moisturizer – Firming & Smoothing also has Lightly Scented and Fragrance-free variants. Always confirm the chosen variant before checkout.

Label-reading rule: Product names, collection placement and “sensitive” claims do not replace the current ingredient list. Patch test even a fragrance-free formula because preservatives, botanicals and other ingredients can still cause reactions.

Frequently asked questions

Does fragrance-free mean odorless?

No. Raw materials can have a mild natural scent even when no fragrance is added.

Is unscented always safer for sensitive skin?

No. It may contain masking fragrance or other potential irritants. Review ingredients and patch test.

Are essential oils considered fragrance?

They are aromatic ingredients and can trigger irritation or allergy. Glimmer Goddess does not classify an essential-oil formula as fragrance-free.
